Annual Holiday Open House returns on Saturday, December 14
New York, NY (October 31, 2024)—The Metropolitan Opera’s annual holiday presentation of Tony Award–winning director Julie Taymor’s English-language adaptation of Mozart’s The Magic Flute returns for 17 performances, December 12–January 4, featuring the Met debuts of tenor Duke Kim and soprano Aigul Khismatullina.
Nimrod David Pfeffer and J. David Jackson share conducting duties, leading two stellar alternating casts. Sopranos Kathryn Lewek and Khismatullina share the role of the Queen of the Night. Lewek returns to the production—having appeared a record 65 times on the Met stage as the Queen of the Night—and will also sing the role in Simon McBurney’s production of the full German-language Die Zauberflöte in the spring.
On December 12, soprano Hera Hyesang Park and tenor David Portillo headline the first cast, reprising the roles of Pamina and Tamino. Rounding out the cast are baritone Will Liverman Papageno, bass Soloman Howard as Sarastro, tenor Rodell Rosel as Monostatos, and bass William Guanbo Su as the Speaker, all reprising past Met portrayals.
On December 13, soprano Emily Pogorelc makes her Met role debut as Pamina, joining Kim in his Met debut as Tamino. Pogorelc made her company debut last season as Lisette in Puccini’s La Rondine. Bass Peixin Chen sings the role of Sarastro; baritone Sean Michael Plumb and bass-baritone Le Bu will make their Met role debuts as Papageno and the Speaker, respectively; and tenor Thomas Capobianco reprises the role of Monostatos.
On Saturday, December 14, at 10AM, children and families are invited to experience the Met’s immersive Holiday Open House, with festive behind-the-scenes demonstrations by members of the Met’s backstage and artistic staff. The event is free to all ticketholders for the matinee performance.
