Siegfried + Poster Project

On the occasion of the new production of Wagner’s Der Ring des Nibelungen

The third exhibition in conjunction with the Met’s new production of the Ring cycle, coinciding with the premiere of Siegfried, Peter Doig’s Siegfried + Poster Project contained four large-scale distemper posters with images of the opera’s hero. In addition, one large-scale painting, Siegfried & Brünnhilde, hung inside the opera house, at the top of the stairs to the Grand Tier. Doig, who is well aware of the passionate attachment Ring lovers have to Wagner’s masterwork, said, “I’m not by any means a Wagner person, so it’s a real challenge to take it in and give it an interpretation. The Ring has got such a mystique about it, and history, and people become obsessed with it. Having listened so much recently whilst painting, I am beginning to understand why.”
