Notations after the Ring
On the occasion of the new production of Wagner’s Der Ring des Nibelungen
Julie Mehretu
September 27, 2010 – January 29, 2011
In celebration of director Robert Lepage’s new production of Wagner’s Ring cycle, Gallery Met presented four exhibitions by major artists over two seasons. Julie Mehretu’s Notations after the Ring coincided with the premiere of Das Rheingold, the first installment of the epic. The exhibition featured a 15-foot-long, 12-part etching, Auguries, as well as a new painting and a suite of recent drawings. “There’s this layering and metering,” commented Mehretu on her works, “there are issues of space, complexity, time, and patterning, that also happen a lot with sound. These works are not scores, but I like the idea that they were made after the process of listening, which informs the process of their making. I’m interested in how those different types of sensory experiences interact with each other.”
