Verdi
Il Trovatore
This memorable broadcast performance marks the only time in company history that the great Verdians Martina Arroyo, Shirley Verrett, Richard Tucker, and Mario Sereni appeared on the Met stage together. Tucker is Manrico, the troubadour and political rebel in love with Leonora (Arroyo). But she is also being wooed by Count di Luna (Sereni), Manrico’s political enemy. What neither of them realizes—until tragedy strikes—is that Manrico and di Luna are brothers. Verrett sings Azucena, the mysterious Gypsy pulling the strings at the center of the story. Zubin Mehta conducts the powerful score.
