Mozart
Idomeneo
Met Music Director James Levine has long been a champion of Mozart’s early opera seria, and his inspired leadership brings out all the human drama and musical beauty in this rich and still underappreciated work. Kobie van Rensburg is Idomeneo, King of Crete, who has survived a storm at sea by swearing to Neptune that he will sacrifice the first person he meets when he steps on land. This person turns out to be his own son, Idamante (Magdalena Kozená). Idamante is in love with Ilia (Dorothea Röschmann), a captive Trojan princess, while also being pursued by the conniving Greek princess Elettra (Alexandra Deshorties). Only by divine intervention through the oracle of Neptune are things brought to a peaceful end.
