Wagner
Lohengrin
Legendary American diva Eleanor Steber is radiant as the maligned Elsa, falsely accused of murdering her brother by the sinister Telramund (Hermann Uhde). Elsa is saved by the appearance of the heroic Knight of the Grail, Lohengrin (Brian Sullivan), who defeats Telramund in trial by combat. But Telramund’s wife, the evil sorceress Ortrud (Margaret Harshaw), has other plans in this contest between good and evil. Fritz Stiedry conducts this thrilling performance, which also features the young James McCracken, one of the great dramatic tenors of the 20th century, in a minor role as one of the Nobles.
