Donizetti
L'Elisir d'Amore
“Enchanting” might the best word to describe Donizetti’s delightful, tune-filled, and touching comedy. The marvelous Carlo Bergonzi is Nemorino, a simple, good-hearted farmer, in love with the beautiful, capricious—and wealthy—Adina (Renato Scotto), who hardly knows he even exists. She is much more taken with the flashy good looks and superficial charms of Sergeant Belcore (Mario Sereni). Enter the clever quack Dr. Dulcamara (Fernando Corena), who’s peddling cheap Bordeaux wine as a mystical love potent. But Nemorino’s affection for Adina is honest and sincere, and since this is a comic opera, everything ends just the way it should.
