The great Plácido Domingo gives a tour-de-force performance in the title role of the King of Crete—a man caught in a desperate trap of his own making. To survive a storm at sea he has made an oath that now forces him to sacrifice the life of his beloved son, Idamante (sung by an aristocratic Anne Sofie von Otter). Dawn Upshaw is Ilia, the captured Trojan princess who has fallen in love with Idamante—much to the fury of Elettra (the sensational Carol Vaness) who wants the prince for herself. James Levine conducts the Met Orchestra in a passionate account of Mozart’s magnificent score.
