Wagner
Tannhäuser
Inspired by a real-life medieval Minnesinger, Tannhäuser combines history, myth, and invention to create a unique and powerful drama. In this radio broadcast from the 2023–24 season, tenor Andreas Schager returns to the Met stage following his 2019 star turn in Wagner’s Ring cycle, starring as the title character, trapped between the forces of carnal passion and otherworldly love. Soprano Elza van den Heever and mezzo-soprano Ekaterina Gubanova go head-to-head as the saintly Elisabeth and the lustful Venus, with baritone Christian Gerhaher, in his company debut, as Tannhäuser’s fellow troubadour Wolfram von Eschenbach. Esteemed conductor Donald Runnicles is on the podium to lead Wagner’s soaring score, a perfect showcase for the mighty forces of the Met Orchestra and Chorus.
