Verdi
Don Carlo
Verdi’s longest and most ambitious opera, Don Carlo made a rare Met appearance in its four-act Italian version during the 2022–23 season. In this fiery radio broadcast, tenor Russell Thomas stars in the title role, a young nobleman torn between duty and a forbidden love for his father’s new wife, the princess Elisabetta di Valois. Alongside him, the powerhouse cast features soprano Eleonora Buratto as the object of his illicit affections, mezzo-soprano Yulia Matochkina as Eboli, baritone Peter Mattei as Rodrigo, and bass Günther Groissböck as Filippo II. Bass-baritone John Relyea completes the principal ensemble as the sinister Grand Inquisitor, with Maestro Carlo Rizzi leading the mighty forces of the Met Orchestra and Chorus.
