Donizetti
Lucia di Lammermoor
With a Met career that included a number of roles from the verismo tradition, including eight of Puccini’s heroines, soprano Renata Scotto also found great success in operas from the Bel Canto repertoire. One such was Donizetti’s Lucia di Lammermoor, whose title character goes mad after being forced into a traumatic, arranged marriage. In this radio broadcast from 1973, Scotto reprises her electric portrayal of Lucia (one that she first sang at the Met in 1965) and brings her characteristic intensity to ever phrase. Veteran conductor Francesco Molinari-Pradelli leads a cast that also includes tenor John Alexander as Edgardo, baritone Mario Sereni as Enrico, and bass Paul Plishka as Raimondo.
