Il Trittico
Eight years after his La Fanciulla del West had its world premiere at the Metropolitan Opera in 1910, Giacomo Puccini unveiled a second new work with the company. A triptych of one-act operas, Il Trittico is one of the most expansive undertakings for any opera company, and to celebrate the centenary of its first performance, the Met presented a starry revival during the 2018–19 season. In Il Tabarro, soprano Amber Wagner and tenor Marcelo Álvarez are the adulterous lovers Giorgetta and Luigi, opposite baritone George Gagnidze as Giorgetta’s husband, Michele. Soprano Kristine Opolais, as the repentant title nun, and mezzo-soprano Stephanie Blythe, as her imperious aunt, square off in the central Suor Angelica. And Plácido Domingo takes on the wily title character of Gianni Schicchi in the work’s comic finale. Bertrand de Billy is on the podium throughout to conduct this grand work of theater.
