Mefistofele returns to the Met November 8

• A quartet of important American artists—Angela Meade, Jennifer Check, Michael Fabiano, and Christian Van Horn—make their role debuts in this rarely performed work

• Van Horn, winner of the 2018 Richard Tucker Award, takes on his first leading role at the Met

• Robert Carsen’s landmark production returns to the Met for the first time since its Met premiere during the 1999–2000 season

New York, NY (November 6, 2018)—A deal with the devil is struck with powerful results in the Metropolitan Opera’s production of Arrigo Boito’s Mefistofele, with performances November 8 to December 1, 2018. Starring in the diabolical title role is 2018 Richard Tucker Award winner Christian Van Horn, who joins recent Tucker Award winners Angela Meade as the love interest Margherita and Michael Fabiano as the bargain-making Faust. Rounding out the cast is Jennifer Check as Helen of Troy. Not seen on the Met stage in nearly 20 years, Robert Carsen’s production is conducted by Carlo Rizzi and Joseph Colaneri.

Mefistofele Radio and Online Broadcasts

The November 8, November 19, and December 1 performances of Mefistofele will be broadcast live on Metropolitan Opera Radio on SIRIUS XM Channel 75. The December 1 performance of Mefistofele will be broadcast over the Toll Brothers–Metropolitan Opera International Radio Network, and the November 8 performance will also be streamed live on the Met’s web site, metopera.org.

Mefistofele Artist Biographies

America soprano Angela Meade makes her role debut as Margherita. She made her company debut in 2008 as Elvira in Verdi’s Ernani,and her other Met roles have included the title roles of Donizetti’s Anna Bolena and Bellini’s Norma, Alice Ford in Verdi’s Falstaff, the Countess in Mozart’s Le Nozze di Figaro,Leonora in Verdi’s Il Trovatore,and Donna Anna in Mozart’s Don Giovanni. Last season, she added the title role of Rossini’s Semiramide to her Met repertory. She is a winner of the Met’s 2007 National Council Auditions, the 2011 Richard Tucker Award, and the 2012 Beverly Sills Artist Award. Later this season, she will sing Leonora in Verdi’s Il Trovatore at Seattle Opera and Teatro de la Maestranza in Seville, Spain, as well as Alice Ford in Verdi’s Falstaff at the Dallas Opera.

American soprano Jennifer Check makes her role debut as Helen of Troy. A former member of the Met’s Lindemann Young Artist Development Program, she made her Met debut in 2001 as Clotilde in Bellini’s Norma, and since then has sung roles including Donna Elvira in Mozart’s Don Giovanni and Berta in Rossini’s Il Barbiere di Siviglia.Later this season at the Met, she will sing Donna Anna in Mozart’s Don Giovanni.

American tenor Michael Fabiano makes his role debut as Faust. He made his Met debut in 2010 as Raffaele in Verdi’s Stiffelio. Since being named one of the winners of the Met’s 2007 National Council Auditions, his Met roles have included Cassio in Verdi’s Otello,Alfredo in Verdi’s La Traviata,Alfred in Strauss’s Die Fledermaus,Edgardo in Donizetti’s Lucia di Lammermoor,andRodolfo in Puccini’s La Bohème. In 2014, he was awarded both the Richard Tucker Award and the Beverly Sills Artist Award.Later this season at the Met, he will reprise the role of Rodolfo in Puccini’s La Bohème.

American bass-baritone Christian Van Horn makes his role debut as Mefistofele. His past Met performances have included Colline in La Bohème,the role of his company debut; Pistola in a new production of Verdi’s Falstaff;Speaker in Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte; andJulio in the U.S. premiere of Thomas Adès’s The Exterminating Angel.This season he was awarded the prestigious Richard Tucker Award. Later this season at the Met, he will reprise Colline in Puccini’s La Bohème and make his Met role debut as Publio in Mozart’s La Clemenza di Tito. Other upcoming performances include Escamillo in Bizet’s Carmen at Bavarian State Opera and Zoroastro in Handel’s Orlando at San Francisco Opera.

Italian conductor Carlo Rizzi made his Met debut conducting La Bohème in 1993.Since then, he has conducted more than 200 performances with the company, including Norma, La Traviata, Turandot, Tosca,and Aida.He was the music director of the Welsh National Opera from 1992 to 2001 and from 2004 to 2008, and has also conducted at La Scala, Royal Danish Opera, Vienna State Opera, Bavarian State Opera, Opéra National de Paris, and the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden. He is currently conducting performances of Puccini’s Tosca at the Met.

American conductor Joseph Colaneri made his Met debut in 2000 leading La Bohème, and has also conducted performances of Don Pasquale, Lucia di Lammermoor, Rigoletto, Falstaff, Nabucco, and Norma. From 1987 to 1998, he was a conductor with New York City Opera, and he has been a member of the conducting staff at the Met since 1998. He is artistic director of opera at the Mannes School of Music at the New School, and since 2013 has served as music director of the Glimmerglass Festival.
