Donizetti’s L’Elisir d’Amore Returns to the Met on January 10

• Soprano Golda Schultz and tenor Javier Camarena to make their Met role debuts as Adina and Nemorino on opening night
•  Soprano Aleksandra Kurzak, tenor Xabier Anduaga, and bass-baritone Alex Esposito to lead cast for spring performances, starting April 13

         New York, NY (December 30, 2022)—Donizetti’s sparkling comedy L’Elisir d’Amore, opening January 10, marks the exciting Met role debuts for soprano Golda Schultz and tenor Javier Camarena as Adina and Nemorino. The radiant soprano takes on the role of the wealthy landowner, following her triumphant performances last season as Anne Trulove in Stravinsky’s The Rake’s Progress. Camarena’s performances as Nemorino, the poor villager hopelessly in love with Adina, follows his unexpected company role debut as the Duke of Mantua in Verdi’s Rigoletto when he stepped in for an ill Stephen Costello earlier this month.

         After the six-performance winter run, L’Elisir d’Amore returns in the spring for six additional performances, April 13–29, with soprano Aleksandra Kurzak reprising her portrayal of Adina. Both making their Met debuts, tenor Xabier Anduaga and bass-baritone Alex Esposito join Kurzak on stage as Nemorino and Doctor Dulcamara, respectively.

         Joining Schultz and Camarena for the winter performances are baritone Ambrogio Maestri, a Met favorite, as Dulcamara, and baritone Davide Luciano and bass-baritone Michael Sumuel sharing the role of Sergeant Belcore. In the spring, tenor Jonah Hoskins and baritone Joshua Hopkins, who appeared as Orpheus in Matthew Aucoin’s Eurydice at the Met last season, joins Kurzak, Anduaga, and Esposito. The production also marks Maestro Michele Gamba’s Met debut. 

         Bartlett Sher’s production sets the action in 1836 in a small rural Italian village, when the Risorgimento, the movement for Italian independence, was beginning to gather momentum. The creative team also includes set designer Michael Yeargan, costume designer Catherine Zuber, and lighting designer Jennifer Tipton.

L’Elisir d’Amore Broadcasts on Radio and Online

         The January 10, 21, and April 26 performances of L’Elisir d’Amore will be broadcast live on Metropolitan Opera Radio on SiriusXM Channel 355. The January 21 performance will also be broadcast over the Toll Brothers–Metropolitan Opera International Radio Network.

         Audio from the January 10 and April 26 performances will be streamed live on the Met’s website, metopera.org.
