Variety Dance

The Metropolitan Opera will be auditioning DANCERS exceptionally versed in a variety of styles, including but not limited to ballet, character, contemporary, jazz, Flamenco, etc. for the 2024-25 season.  Auditions will be open to dancers who are members of AGMA (American Guild of Musical Artists, Inc.), AEA (Actor’s Equity Association), and non-union dancers. Dancers who attend any of these May and June auditions will be considered for revivals and invitations to new production auditions as listed under the 2024-25 New Production details.

SALARY INFORMATION

Rehearsals will pay no less than $61.84/hour. Overtime rates are paid under some circumstances, as provided in The Met’s agreement with AGMA. Performances will pay no less than $221.81/performance performed, or $221.81/performance covered. Performance extras are paid when appropriate based on casting, choreography, and staging. These roles will be hired as W2 employees.

ADDITIONAL AUDITION INFORMATION

  • These are in-person auditions only.
  • Dancers cast in any production and hired by the Met will be required to join AGMA. If you are an AGMA or AEA member, please bring your VALID membership card with you.
  • The audition will consist of ballet and contemporary styles. Please bring appropriate footwear.
  • For the In-House auditions, dancers may report directly to the Ballet Studio to sign-in. For all AGMA and Non-Union Calles, please enter the Metropolitan Opera House (Lincoln Center) through the Concourse doors into Founders’ Hall. Auditions will be held in the

  • Seeking dancers well-versed in Flamenco vocabulary to portray men and women; strong acting abilities a plus; dancers will be expected to display fan skills and dancers seeking a woman’s role may be asked to demonstrate use of skirt (Bata de Cola).

Contemporary Dancers

  • Seeking dancers well versed in contemporary forms to portray men and women highly skilled in rhythmic/percussive phasing; strong, athletic movers; acting experience a must; dancers may be asked to climb and dance on raised set pieces.

  • Seeking dancers with training in the post-modern tradition to portray men; ability to learn and re-learn quickly; experience in large scale work that includes quick changes, and multiple movement tasks, from the highly theatrical to moving a prop with choreographic precision; dancers with interest in making material based on formal assignments and ability to be team players, help others, and be punctual and present.

  • 9 Dancers to portray Men + 3 Covers; 1 Dancer will also act as the “Herod” Double

Women’s Roles: Dancers with strong ballet technique and acting skills.

Men’s Roles: Seeking athletic dancers versed in a variety of styles; partnering required; acting experience an asset; dancers will be required to perform wearing masks during the production.
