Ben Bliss and Golda Schultz Star in Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte, Opening March 23
Also featuring soprano Kathryn Lewek, baritone Thomas Oliemans, tenor Thomas Ebenstein, bass Stephen Milling, and bass-baritone Shenyang, conducted by Evan Rogister
New York, New York (February 27, 2024)—Tony Award–nominated director Simon McBurney’s full-length, German-language production of Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte, which had its Met premiere in 2023, returns for 11 performances starting March 23. Soprano Golda Schultz stars as the princess Pamina, opposite tenor Ben Bliss as the prince Tamino. Soprano Kathryn Lewek returns as the reigning Queen of the Night, with opening night marking her 75th Met performance in the role. Baritone Thomas Oliemans, who made his Met debut in 2023 in the production premiere as Papageno, returns to reprise the role. Tenor Thomas Ebenstein and bass-baritone Shenyang make their Met role debuts as Monostatos and the Speaker, respectively. Bass Stephen Milling returns to the Met as Sarastro, the same role he sang in the 2023 production premiere. Maestro Evan Rogister takes the podium to conduct Mozart’s dramatic and beloved fable.
McBurney’s inventive staging includes whimsical aerial effects, acrobatics, immersive projections, sound effects created in real time by an onstage Foley artist, and a raised orchestra pit that puts the musicians in view—and allows them to interact with the performers on stage.
In addition to McBurney, who also serves as choreographer, the creative team includes set designer Michael Levine, costume designer Nicky Gillibrand, lighting designer Jean Kalman, projection designer Finn Ross, sound designer Gareth Fry, and associate director Rachael Hewer.
Die Zauberflöte has been performed at the Met 516 times to date. It was first performed at the Met on March 30, 1900, in Italian.
