New York, NY (January 22, 2024)—Soprano Lise Davidsen will make her second highly anticipated Metropolitan Opera role debut this season as Leonore in Beethoven’s Fidelio, following her performances in November in the title role of Puccini’s Tosca. The production of Fidelio will run for five performances from March 4 through March 15, 2025.

Celebrated veteran bass René Pape returns to the Met as Rocco, having last appeared in 2021 in the title role of Mussorgsky’s Boris Godunov. Tenor David Butt Philip stars as Florestan. Butt Philip last performed at the Met during the 2021–22 season as Laertes in the company premiere of Brett Dean’s Hamlet. Bass-baritone Tomasz Konieczny makes his Met role debut as Don Pizarro.

The cast also includes soprano Ying Fang as Marzelline, following her performances last season as Euridice in Gluck’s Orfeo ed Euridice, and tenor Magnus Dietrich in his company debut as Jaquino. Bass Stephen Milling sings the role of Don Fernando and will also portray Sarastro in the revival of Simon McBurney’s production of Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte later this season. Grammy Award–nominated conductor Susanna Mälkki returns to the podium to lead Jürgen Flimm’s production.

Led by Flimm, the creative team includes set designer Robert Israel, costume designer Florence von Gerkan, and lighting designer Duane Schuler.

Fidelio was last seen at the Met in 2017. The opera has been called a hymn to freedom and human dignity. One of the most famous and powerful moments in Fidelio is the soaring Act I Prisoners’ Chorus, “O welche Lust!” This production by Flimm premiered on October 13, 2000.
