New York, NY (September 25, 2019)— Anna Netrebko and Željko Lučić reunite as Shakespeare’s ruthlessly ambitious Scottish royals in Adrian Noble’s production of Verdi’s Macbeth, opening September 25. The pair has previously received tremendous acclaim for their portrayals in the same production at the Met in 2014. The revival also stars Matthew Polenzani as Macduff and Ildar Abdrazakov as Banquo, with Marco Armiliato on the podium. Anna Pirozzi sings the role of Lady Macbeth on October 1 in her Met debut.

Macbeth Worldwide Radio Broadcasts

The September 25 and October 4 performances of Macbeth will be broadcast live on Metropolitan Opera Radio on Sirius XM Channel 75, and a performance from this run will be taped for broadcast over the Toll Brothers–Metropolitan Opera International Radio Network on December 21.

Macbeth Artist Biographies

Since making her Met debut in 2002, as Natasha in the company premiere of Prokofiev’s War and Peace, Russian soprano Anna Netrebko has sung 23 roles at the Met, including her role debuts as the title characters in Puccini’s Tosca and Manon Lescaut; as well as performances as Tatiana in Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin; Leonora in Verdi’s Il Trovatore; and the title roles in Tchaikovsky’s Iolanta,Cilea’s Adriana Lecouvreur, and Verdi’s Aida. She will reprise Tosca later this season, which will be seen around the world as part of The Met: Live in HD series. Netrebko will also headline the Met’s 2019 New Year’s Eve Gala, performing in fully staged acts from three different Puccini operas, conducted by Met Music Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin.

American tenor Matthew Polenzani makes his role debut as Macduff. He has sung more than 360 performances with the company since his debut in 1997 as Boyar in Mussorgsky’s Boris Godunov. Other Met roles include Nemorino in Donizetti’s L’Elisir d’Amore, the title role in Mozart’s Idomeneo, Ferrando in Mozart’s Così fan tutte, the title character in Offenbach’s Les Contes d’Hoffmann, and role debuts as Nadir in the Met’s new production of Bizet’s Les Pêcheurs de Perles and in the title role of Donizetti’s Roberto Devereux. Last season at the Met, he sang Vaudémont in Tchaikovsky’s Iolanta and the title role in Mozart’s La Clemenza di Tito. Also this season at the Met, he sings Rodolfo in Puccini’s La Bohème and the Italian Singer in Strauss’s Der Rosenkavalier

Serbian baritone Željko Lučić made his Met debut in 2006 as Barnaba in Ponchielli’s La Gioconda and has sung 16 roles with the company. His other Met appearances include Verdi baritone roles such as the title role in Nabucco, Amonasro in Aida, Iago in Otello, and Count di Luna in Il Trovatore, as well as Puccini roles such as Scarpia in Tosca and Jack Rance in La Fanciulla del West. Other performances this season include Scarpia at Vienna State Opera and Bavarian State Opera, the title role of Verdi’s Rigoletto at Paris Opera, and Giorgio Germont in Verdi’s La Traviata at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden

Russian bass Ildar Abdrazakov makes his Met role debut as Banquo. His other credits with the Met include both Leporello and the title role in Mozart’s Don Giovanni, Escamillo in Bizet’s Carmen, Henry VIII in Donizetti’s Anna Bolena, the title character in Borodin’s Prince Igor, and Dosifei in Mussorgsky’s Khovanshchina. Other performances this season include the title role in Don Giovanni at Lyric Opera of Chicago, King Philip II in Verdi’s Don Carlo at Bavarian State Opera, and the title role of Verdi’s Attila in concert at the Baden-Baden Festival. He will also be seen later this season as Méphistophélès in the Met’s concert presentation of Berlioz’s La Damnation de Faust.

Italian conductor Marco Armiliato has conducted more than 430 performances at the Met since his debut in 1998. In recent seasons, he has conducted performances at the Vienna State Opera, Lyric Opera of Chicago, Opernhaus Zürich, and Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona. Also this season at the Met, he will lead Puccini’s Turandot and La Bohème. Upcoming performances include Puccini’s Tosca and Verdi’s Aida and Il Trovatore at Vienna State Opera, La Bohème and Aida in Zürich, and La Bohème at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden.
