Tara Erraught and Javier Camarena star in a revival of La Cenerentola, Rossini’s take on the classic Cinderella tale, opening March 12

         New York, NY (March 10, 2020)— The Metropolitan Opera presents six performances of Rossini’s La Cenerentola, conducted by James Gaffigan, beginning March 12, 2020. Tara Erraught stars as the heroine Angelina (Cinderella) in this version of the timeless fairy tale, with Javier Camarena as her Prince Charming, Don Ramiro. When he last sang this role at the Met in 2014, the overwhelming audience response led him to give a rare mid-performance encore of the aria “Si, ritrovarla io giuro.”

         The supporting cast features Maurizio Muraro as the bumbling Don Magnifico, Christian Van Horn as the benevolent Alidoro, and Vito Priante in his Met debut as the servant Dandini. The opera is presented in Cesare Lievi’s charming production.

La Cenerentola Worldwide Broadcasts on Radio and Online

         The March 12 and March 21 performances of La Cenerentola will be broadcast live on Metropolitan Opera Radio on Sirius XM Channel 75. The March 21 performance will be broadcast over the Toll Brothers–Metropolitan Opera International Radio Network, and the March 12 performance will also be streamed live on the Met’s web site, metopera.org.

La Cenerentola Artist Biographies

         Irish mezzo-soprano Tara Erraught has previously sung Angelina at Bavarian State Opera, Welsh National Opera, and Irish National Opera. She made her company debut in 2017 as Nicklausse and the Muse in Offenbach’s Les Contes d’Hoffmann, followed by performances as Hansel in Humperdinck’s Hansel and Gretel. Other recent opera credits include Hansel and Despina in Mozart’s Così fan tutte in Munich, Rosina in Rossini’s Il Barbiere di Siviglia at Vienna State Opera, Donna Elvira in Mozart’s Don Giovanni at Staatsoper Unter den Linden in Berlin, and Stéphano in Gounod’s Roméo et Juliette at Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona. This season, she also sings Rosina and Donna Elvira in Berlin as well as Alcina in Haydn’s Orlando Paladino at the Munich Opera Festival.

         Mexican tenor Javier Camarena reprises Don Ramiro, which he previously sang at the Met in 2014. He made his Met debut in 2011 as Count Almaviva in Rossini’s Il Barbiere di Siviglia, followed by performances as Tonio in Donizetti’s La Fille du Régiment, Ernesto in Donizetti’s Don Pasquale, Nadir in Bizet’s Les Pêcheurs des Perles, Elvino in Bellini’s La Sonnambula, Arturo in Bellini’s I Puritani, and Idreno in Rossini’s Semiramide. Recent performances include Don Ramiro at Opernhaus Zürich, Nemorino in Donizetti’s L’Elisir d’Amore at Teatro Real in Madrid, Arturo at Paris Opera, and Tonio at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden. This season, he also sings Ernesto at the Salzburg Festival and Elvino at Deutsche Oper Berlin.

         Italian baritone Vito Priante makes his Met debut as Dandini, a role he has previously sung at Vienna State Opera, Bavarian State Opera, Lyric Opera of Chicago, and Teatro dell’Opera di Roma. Recent performances include Leporello in Mozart’s Don Giovanni in Rome, the Duke of Nottingham in Donizetti’s Roberto Devereux at Bavarian State Opera, Escamillo in Bizet’s Carmen at Teatro Fenice in Venice, and Papageno in Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden. Other roles this season include Figaro in Rossini’s Il Barbiere di Siviglia at the Canadian Opera Company and the Four Villains in Offenbach’s Les Contes d’Hoffmann at Stuttgart Opera.

         Italian bass-baritone Maurizio Muraro adds a new role to his Met repertory as Don Magnifico. He has sung more than 120 performances with the company in roles including Sulpice in Donizetti’s La Fille du Régiment, Talpa in Il Tabarro and Simone in Gianni Schicchi in Puccini’s Il Trittico, the Prince of Bouillon in a new production of Cilea’s Adriana Lecouvreur, Dr. Bartolo in Rossini’s Il Barbiere di Siviglia, Don Alfonso in Mozart’s Così fan tutte, and the Bailiff in Massenet’s Werther. Also this season at the Met, he sings Dr. Bartolo in Mozart’s Le Nozze di Figaro.

         American bass-baritone Christian Van Horn makes his Met role debut as Alidoro. His past Met performances have included Publio in Mozart’s La Clemenza di Tito, the title role of Boito’s Mefistofele, Colline in Puccini’s La Bohème, Pistola in a new production of Verdi’s Falstaff, the Speaker in Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte, and Julio in the U.S. premiere of Thomas Adès’s The Exterminating Angel. Last season, he was awarded the prestigious Richard Tucker Award. Other performances this season include John Claggart in Britten’s Billy Budd and Zoroastro in Handel’s Orlando at San Francisco Opera as well as Walter in Verdi’s Luisa Miller at Lyric Opera of Chicago. This season at the Met, he also sings Colline and the Doctor in a new production of Berg’s Wozzeck.

         American conductor James Gaffigan made his Met debut last season leading Puccini’s La Bohème. He is currently the chief conductor of the Lucerne Symphony Orchestra and is also the principal guest conductor of the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra. Working both domestically and internationally, he has conducted at many other companies including Lyric Opera of Chicago, Washington National Opera, San Francisco Opera, Santa Fe Opera, Vienna State Opera, Dutch National Opera, Bavarian State Opera, and Hamburg State Opera. This season he also leads Mozart’s Don Giovanni in Chicago, Verdi’s Ernani in San Francisco, and Wagner’s Tristan und Isolde in Santa Fe.
