New York, NY (February 18, 2022)—After the successful first half of the 2021–22 season and a planned February break, the Metropolitan Opera returns with a slate of three new productions and 12 classic revivals for its spring season that runs February 28–June 11. Music Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin conducts the company’s first-ever performances of the original five-act French version of Verdi’s Don Carlos beginning February 28, with a sextet of principal artists in David McVicar’s new staging, including tenor Matthew Polenzani in the title role, soprano Sonya Yoncheva, mezzo-soprano Jamie Barton, baritone Etienne Dupuis, and bass-baritones Eric Owens and John Relyea. In April, theater and film director Simon Stone makes his Met debut with a new production of Donizetti’s Lucia di Lammermoor featuring soprano Nadine Sierra in the title role opposite tenor Javier Camarena. The Met premiere of Brett Dean’s Hamlet, a riveting contemporary take on Shakespeare’s masterpiece, arrives in May, with tenor Allan Clayton making his Met debut in the title role and soprano Brenda Rae as Ophelia.

Twelve revivals grace the Met stage this spring. Soprano Anna Netrebko makes her anticipated return to the Met in the title role of Puccini’s Turandot. Soprano Lise Davidsen sings two Strauss heroines, the title character of Ariadne auf Naxos and Chrysothemis in Elektra, opposite soprano Nina Stemme in the title role. Elza van den Heever makes her role debut as the title heroine of Handel’s Rodelinda. Nézet-Séguin conducts performances of Puccini’s Tosca starring Aleksandra Kurzak in the title role opposite tenor Roberto Alagna. Philip Glass’s Akhnaten returns following its sold-out run during the 2019–20 season, with countertenor Anthony Roth Costanzo reprising the title role of the Egyptian pharaoh. Susanna Mälkki returns to the Met to conduct Stravinsky’s The Rake’s Progress with a cast starring tenor Ben Bliss and soprano Golda Schultz.
