Backstage, Through the Years

The kind of behind-the-scenes work featured in Faces of the Met has been an essential element in getting productions on the stage since the Metropolitan Opera opened in 1883. Photographs on this page are selected from the Met Archives’ large collection of images taken of workers over the years in the company’s construction shops, on stage and backstage, and in rehearsal. The photos are often undated and the individuals frequently unidentified.
