William Wegman: Cinderella
April 12 – May 5, 2018
In the early days of Gallery Met, famed photographer William Wegman called on his magnificent Weimaraners to sit for memorable portraits of an undone Lucia di Lammermoor, a tormented Macbeth, and the lost-in-the-woods siblings Hansel and Gretel. Now the artist is back for a solo exhibition of work tied to the Metropolitan Opera premiere of Massenet’s Cendrillon. The title heroine of this operatic Cinderella story is captured by Wegman in beleaguered charwoman mode, in a pumpkin chariot, and donning the famous glass slipper, among other moments from the story. Says Gallery Met director Dodie Kazanjian, “Bill’s ever-fertile imagination sheds new light on the classic fairy tale. His images are startling, hilarious and vintage Wegman—without neglecting the story’s darker undercurrents.”
