Wagner said this early-Romantic gem was the most German of German operas. The cast in this rare U.S. performance is sensational: Sándor Kónya as our hero, the forester Max, who must win a shooting contest in order to marry his beloved Agathe (the ravishing Pilar Lorengar), despite the dark plotting of Caspar (Gerd Feldhoff).
