Gluck
Orfeo ed Euridice
Originally composed for the castrato Gaetano Guadagni, the title hero of Gluck’s Orfeo ed Euridice has since been taken on by both mezzo-sopranos and countertenors. During the Met’s 2019–20 season, dynamic mezzo-soprano Jamie Barton—who’s repertoire with the company spans everything from Mozart and Bellini to Dvořák, Poulenc, and Wagner—starred as the mythic musician who ventures into the underworld. Opposite her, another artist with an equally varied Met career, soprano Hei-Kyung Hong, was Orfeo’s beloved, Euridice. And rising soprano Hera Hyesang Park completed the principal trio as the spunky god Amore. British maestro Mark Wigglesworth took the podium to lead a stirring performance that showcased the power of the mighty Met Chorus.
