Donizetti
Lucia di Lammermoor
During the 2021–22 season, Simon Stone, one of today’s most in-demand and provocative directors, made his Met debut with a bold new production of Lucia di Lammermoor that reimagined Donizetti’s bel canto tragedy in the modern-day American Rust Belt. In this performance from the company’s series of live, high-definition cinema transmissions, soprano Nadine Sierra gives a stunning performance as the haunted title heroine, a young woman caught between an illicit love and an overbearing brother determined to use her to rehabilitate their family’s fortunes. Alongside Sierra, the starry cast also features tenor Javier Camarena as Lucia’s lover, Edgardo, and baritone Artur Ruciński as the self-centered and manipulative Enrico. Bass-baritone Christian Van Horn rounds out the principal cast as Lucia’s kind-hearted protector, the priest Raimondo, with Donizetti specialist Riccardo Frizza on the podium to lead the engrossing new staging.
