New Year's Eve Gala Starring Anna Netrebko
During the 2019–20 season, the Met pulled out all the stops to ring in the new year, presenting a one-night-only gala event headlined by superstar soprano Anna Netrebko. Conducted by the company’s Music Director, Yannick Nézet-Séguin, Netrebko appeared in fully staged acts from three of Giacomo Puccini’s most popular operas. The evening began in the wintry Act I garret of La Bohème, with Netrebko singing Mimì opposite tenor Matthew Polenzani as Rodolfo. After intermission, she took on the title role in Act I of Tosca, sharing the stage with her husband, tenor Yusif Eyvazov, as Cavaradossi and bass-baritone Evgeny Nikitin as Scarpia. And in the performance’s grand finale, Netrebko and Eyvazov returned, going head to head as Turandot and Calàf in the explosive second act of Puccini’s final masterpiece. It was a truly spectacular occasion—befitting one of opera’s most captivating divas.
