Verdi
Macbeth
One of the most memorable performances of the last decade came in 2014, when Anna Netrebko electrified audiences as the conniving Lady Macbeth in Verdi’s grim adaptation of Shakespeare. During the 2019–20 season, she reprised her hair-raising portrayal, heard here in a thrilling radio broadcast. The soprano finds her match in baritone Željko Lučić, who commands the stage in the title role. As Banquo and Macduff, two obstacles to the Macbeths ascent to the throne, bass Ildar Abdrazakov and tenor Matthew Polenzani complete the exceptional principal cast. And under the baton of Marco Armiliato, the Met Orchestra and Chorus shine, brilliantly executing one of Verdi’s most engrossing scores.
