Making her Met debut as Musetta in Puccini’s La Bohème in 2014, Jennifer Rowley only truly rose to prominence at the Met in 2017, when she took on the role of Roxane in Franco Alfano’s 20th-century rarity Cyrano de Bergerac, replacing an ill colleague. From that star turn onward, the soprano appeared in a number of principal roles, including in this thrilling radio broadcast of Puccini’s melodrama Tosca from the 2018–19 season. In the title role, Rowley delivers a masterful performance as opera’s ultimate diva, opposite tenor Joseph Calleja as her ardent lover, the revolutionary artist Mario Cavaradossi. Bass-baritone Wolfgang Koch, who made his Met debut with this run of performances, completes the opera’s fraught love triangle as the nefarious Roman chief of police, Baron Scarpia. Maestro Carlo Rizzi leads the Met Orchestra and Chorus in this electrifying score—one of the pinnacles of the verismo repertoire.
